The series of eight above this paragraph depicts multiple portraits, each of one of my friends who is graduating. I've known most of this people for somewhere around five years and they are about to take a huge step in their lives by going off to college. I wanted to make the best of the situation and attempted to capture each person in a single shot, hopefully highlighting their personality. I Photoshopped frames on top of each portrait in order to add interest to the photo, I picked the frames according to what suited each person .I think these are probably my favorite pictures I've taken, even though it was not an assignment, because they are probably the most personal pictures I've taken.
This is my picture for the second group assignment which was to take a dream picture. My group decided to go the nightmare route of dreams and I pulled from the original Evil Dead movie to get inspiration for this piece. I wanted Briana to look sort of insane and to do this I put make up on her and smeared it to look like she'd been through a lot. After this I manipulated colors and textures in order for the picture to look creepier and older than it would originally. I also whited out her eyes and this helped me understand how to make Photoshop look a lot more realistic.
This is piece is derived from the work of Andy Goldsworthy, I didn't really like his art that much so I somewhat struggled to come up with ways to incorporate his work into mine. He does a lot of 3-D nature installations so I took that idea of pattern and nature and incorporated this into a portrait of Briana. I used fake flowers and pinecones and put it in her hair. I think this is one of the most successful pictures I've taken when it comes to just photography. I honestly cant think of anything to fix in this pictures and I really like like the textures against the solid values.
You told me I should try some Maggie Taylor type stuff and you wanted me to do the "moody landscape" tutorial. I found another one I liked better and I followed it for probably half the tutorial but my vision for this piece differed from that of the original tutorials. This is my second attempt at some sort of digital imaging (the first being the flower girl) and I'm decently proud of what I have, although there are still a few things I can fix like taking out the purpley color in her denim jacket. I didn't really have a concept when going into this piece, the main purpose of this piece was to practice using Photoshop more in detail than I have before.
This piece I wanted to keep simple and clean looking, relying on the t.v. for color. I base this piece on the phrase "No signal" reflecting on the idea that as human beings were are shaped and manipulated by society, which dehumanizes us and strips us of what makes us who we are. I still need to fix the t.v. and clean it up somewhat but I think the photography part of this piece is pretty successful.
For this project I believe we were suppose to depict a scene from a book or poem/song, so for my piece I decided to represent Alice going down the Rabbit hole in Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. I think the concept is successful and I like the way Briana fits into the painting, my only issue with this piece would be the craft-man ship when it comes to the paint work.
So this is my photo for the Prop assignment. The photo is originally of Nic holding a preserved sheep heart in a jar. After I took the image I painted a animal skull on top of the picture. My idea behind this piece is the depiction of an incubus who collects hearts, an incubus is basically a mythical creature that feeds upon women and I wanted to idea of collecting the actual organ we connect with love without actually collecting love itself.I think this is probably one of the most successful pieces of mine that I so like this because the mixed media createss a solid character unlike how these pieces have turned out before.
Description- This is a picture of a hand with flowes coming out of the fingers and moss going up the arm.
Intepretation- I tride to stick to greens, yellows, and browns and I put more of the painting portion of this picture at the bottom making the hand the focal point rather than the arm.
Analysis- Like the previous picture I aimed to merge nature with the human body respresenting the place weve made in the environment around us.
Judgement- Again I think this would look a lot nicer if it printed better but what can we do about that.

Description- This is a picture of the shoulder and neck area of a person. There are barnicles and coral painted over the picture. Nice.
Interpretation- I used the orange and blue so they contrast eachother and make up for the flatness of the picture. I tried to put more barnicles in the bottom left corner to balance our the heaviness of the top right corner.
Analysis- In this picture as well as the one above I aimed to merge nature with the human body to represent how we have forced ourselves into the environments around us.
Judgement- I think this would have been a lot more sucessful if the picture rpinted out the way it looked on the computer.

Description- So this is my cat on a speaker in my living room looking out into the distance.
Interpretation- The different values in this photograph balance it out and the cat is the focal point.
Analysis- I really just wanted to capture my cat theres no real deeper meaning behind this picture.
Judgement- I took this picture when I was sick and I saw a photo opportunity.
Interpretation- The different values in this photograph balance it out and the cat is the focal point.
Analysis- I really just wanted to capture my cat theres no real deeper meaning behind this picture.
Judgement- I took this picture when I was sick and I saw a photo opportunity.
Description- This picture depicts a body with a boque of flowes coming out of the neck. The body and the background are monochromatic while the flowers are in colors, mostly warm.
Interpretation- The flowers are the focal point of the image while the black and white body balances out the imense amount of texture in the upper half of the picture.
Analysis- I wanted to replace the humanity of this picture with something more natural to give everyday things, such as flowers, human-like qualities by creating characters such as these.
Judgement- For my first digital imaging piece i'm actually pretty proud of this. I think it works.

Judgement- For my first digital imaging piece i'm actually pretty proud of this. I think it works.
Description- These three images are a mix of photography and 2D. I took pictures of Briana, nic, and Christina and painted different animals over their face.
Analysis- The painting part of these pictures balances out the picture portion. The paint creates textures while the photograpy brings in realism.
Interpretation- I replaced their faces with that of an animal to connect how we place our selves in social structure. We see ourselves as higher up in the structure of this world than any other living creature although we still obtain these animal like characteristics ourselves.
Judgement- I really like the concept of mixing 2D with photography. I think the pieces of Nic and Christina work the best because of the way the 2D and Photo connect through color. The outift Briana is wearing clashes not to great with the cat face.

Mixed Media Reflections (Six pieces above)
Description- These are six different portraits I took in film with window lighting and drew sugar skull designs over.
Analysis- I used the sugar skull designs to create detail and texture.
Interpretation- I tried to create a design based off of each of the people I took a portrait of.
Judgement- This works as a series and there are definitely stronger pieces in it than other.

Photojournalism.
Description- This picture is of my baby cousin, Oliver, who is being held by my sister Sydney. In the foreground you can only see the back of Oliver's head and my sister's hand. In the background you can see my sister's face as well as Oliver in a mirror.
Analysis- The mirror helps create balance in the photo and the warm colors create unity. The focal point of the image would be the back of Oliver's head.
Interpretation- I'm the oldest of the grandchildren on my mom's side (along with my sisters) and Oliver will be the last cousin I'll have. When I hold him or when i see my sister holding him it really emphasizes the age difference. We are sixteen years older than him and we are capable of taking care of him. I have a cousin that is two years older than me on my dads side and two that are two years younger then I have a cousin that is 16 years younger and it seems so incredible to me. In this photograph I wanted to capture that age difference that I saw, as well as my ability to take care of this child.
Judgement- I think this picture is successful, I wish there more of the wall was present on the left side of the picture plane.

Fashion
Description- Zoe is sitting on a red couch (?) with the American flag in the background and she is wearing black, blue, and red clothing.
Analysis- The biggest element of design evident in this picture is color. The only colors used are red, blue, white, and black. This helps balance out the positive and negative space.
Interpretation- So this picture is for fashion photography and generally fashion photography does not have a deeper meaning. I just wanted to create and outfit based off of a country or a countries flag. I would like to do more but I was unable to obtain any other flag besides the American flag.
Judgement- I think the lighting in this photo is rather successful the only problem I really have at this point with my photography is minor technical things, like the picture is slightly crooked.

Self Portrait
Description- Well, it's a self portrait. My hair is in a braid. I'm wearing clothes despite what this picture reveals. There is that lace-cloth again on the right of the picture plane. I look slightly happy, but not overwhelmingly so.
Analysis- There's a lovely juxtaposition of the intricateness of the lace and the blandness of my skin. The lace as well, as my braid, lead you into the focal point of the picture which is probably my eyes. Again, I used a split complementary color scheme with neutrals and blues. The lace makes an interesting pattern onto my face adding some detail to my skin.
Interpretation- Well I really love shadows so I wanted to do something interesting with them and this is what I came up with. I also like interesting textures so I used my hair and the lace to create some interesting detail. I don't really know what I'm trying to say about myself, I never know what I'm trying to say about this.
Judgement- I want this to be a little more constrasty but that's the only thing I can think about fixing.

Landscape
Description- There is a hill in the background, a tree in the middle ground, as well as a fence, and some dead grass in the foreground, with some sky at the top.
Analysis- There are a lot of unique textures playing off of each other in this portrait and there is a solid use of space. The color scheme is pretty neutral except for the blueish white of the sky.
Interpretation- Again, I wanted to capture grungy Lakeside so this is a tree that caught on fire a few years back over by an egg ranch down the street from my house. I really loved the shape of the tree, the way it slopes down to the right is incredibly interesting to me.
Judgement- The horizon line is a tiny tiny bit raised towards the right of the picture plane and I wish I could have gotten closer to the tree but it was on someone's property and I'm not as daring as some.

Travel
Description- There is a rusty yellow tractor with a fence in front of it and a hill and the sky behind and a tree to the left.
Analysis- The focal point would probably be the wheel of the tractor and there is a lot of line in this photography. The color scheme would be split complimentary.
Interpretation- I live in Lakeside and I think very few people at SCPA live here so I wanted to capture the uniqueness of where I live (no matter how much I dislike it). Lakeside emits a kind of dirty rural feeling that I aimed to capture here. There is a automobile graveyard a few blocks from my house and that is what this is.
Judgement- You pointed out cropping out the road in this picture which I'll do and you're probably seeing the cropped picture right now if I didn't get lazy. I really like the different layers of this picture and how they compliment each other.

Floral
Description- There are two vases of dead flowers, one in focus, one not. The focal point of this shot would be the rose. There is a blue background.
Analysis- Color is mostly used here. The flowers go with more of a warm color scheme while the background compliments the orange in the flowers. The second vase balances out the focal flowers.
Interpretation- I wanted to capture the beauty of flowers that are no longer alive, rather than the typical floral photography you see.
Judgement- There is nothing that really bothers me about his photograph. I'd prefer the background the gradually become darker but that's practically it.

Still Life-Part 2
Description- Pretty much the same as the previous picture except that the light bulbs are in the foreground.
Analysis- Space is used differently here with the placement of the bulbs.
Interpretation- I think this better portrays my purpose over the previous picture.
Judgement- The door again. I'll re-shoot this one.
Analysis- Space is used differently here with the placement of the bulbs.

Still Life
Description- There are three candles in this picture. ne in a candle holder, one in a bottle, and one on this clay spine I made. There s also a bottle and a light bulb. All of these things are on a lace (is it even lace?) table cloth-like thing. There is also a hideous door in the background.
Analysis- I used the rule of three to create a more interesting photograph, as well as using different textures. There is also a primary color scheme, eve though it is pretty faint.
Interpretation- I wanted to used candles because I think they are a much more beautiful light source then artificial lighting.I also wanted to contrast the development in something as mundane and unthought of as our light sources.
Judgement- The only thing that doesn't work is the door, like we talked about. I'll probably re-do this one at a later date because I just got some pre-primered canvas I might be able to use to create a better background. Other than that I really love the set up as well as the contrast of textures.

Elements and Principles of Design
Description- I guess you could call this a portrait, even though there are two people in the picture since the main focus is Briana. Briana is looking forward while Nic is looking to the right of the picture plane.
Analysis- Color, space, and balance are all present in this photography. Briana is in positive space while Nic is negative. Briana is the focus but Nic balances out what would be black background. And finally, they are wearing complimentary colors!
Interpretation- In this picture I aimed to exemplify specific element and principles of design and applying them to my photography rather than just my 2D art.
Judgement- I need to get rid of "Basement." Terrible. I'll look up a tutorial right now on how to.

Portrait
Description- The photo is a black and white profile portrait of Briana. She is wearing a denim jacket and her hair is in a low pony tail. She is looking towards the upper right part of the picture plane. There is a black and white frame around the focal point of the picture.
Analysis- Negative and positive space are used in this photograph to draw the viewer towards the focal point. The curves of the lines that compose the frame around Briana's face add balance to the photograph by bringing the viewers eye around the page.
Interpretation- This photograph represents Briana and was taken and created to capture who she is and how I see her. I aimed to capture a classic black and white portrait to display a calm yet graceful feel to the portrait.
Judgement- I need to practice in Photoshop more and this has some what helped me learn how to do certain things. Other than my pretty basic Photoshop skills I'm pretty satisfied with this photograph.
